2017 Recipients
The Chris Haycocks Scholarship
The Chris Haycocks Scholarship for 2016 has been awarded to Freshman, Jack Lowe. An influential player for Charlotte Catholic High School’s varsity team since his sophomore year, Lowe arrives in Blacksburg having played rugby since he was 10. During his senior year he was the starting safety for the varsity football team while maintaining a 3.7 GPA. Whilst playing rugby at Charlotte Catholic, Lowe, a center who has played fullback and wing, helped the team win two state championships as well as being placed second twice and fourth in the High School Rugby National Championships. He also played for the North Carolina All Stars team where they took third place in the South East regional tournament.
The Adam Kaufman Leadership Award
The Adam Kaufman Leadership Award for 2017 has been awarded to 5th year senior, Michael Cirbee. A double major in Building Construction and Real Estate. Cirbee has been playing rugby for eight years, starting his freshman year of high school at St. John’s Prep in Massachusetts. While at high school he also played for Mystic River Rugby Club. During his freshman year he was a starter on the Seven’s team and has been a member of the team at the last four Collegiate Rugby Championships. He has also been a prominent member of the Fifteen’s team at flyhalf and center. In his senior year he was appointed captain and elected president. Cirbee has led by example on and off the field, and hopes to contribute as a valid member of the team during his final year before graduating.
