The Chris Haycocks Scholarship
The Chris Haycocks Scholarship for 2016 has been awarded to Freshman, Ieuan Israel. Having played rugby for 11 years, Israel will arrive in Blacksburg with a lot of experience. Throughout his high school years at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, Virginia, he coped with the pressures of being both an All-Conference football player, an All-State wrestler and developed into a worthy leader among his peers in three sports. He was selected to play for the Virginia All Stars in rugby, three years running and played for the Maryland Exiles HS elite Sevens team in Las Vegas and at the CRC in Philadelphia.
The Adam Kaufman Leadership Award
The Adam Kaufman Leadership Award for 2016 has been awarded to rising Senior Zachary Schiemann. From nearby Franklin County, Zach, a Materials Science and Engineering Major, only started playing rugby the first semester of his Sophomore year at Virginia Tech. At Franklin County High School Zach played football and wrestled. He received the defensive player of the year award and was a 1st team All-District linebacker for two years in a row, and he was an integral part of a team that went furthest in the school’s playoff history. At Virginia Tech he has built a reputation for a high work-rate and tackle count on the field, displaying great leadership qualities. He was a member of the 2015 sevens team that won the ACRL title and competed at the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championships.
